The Big Food Drive

A fresh produce distribution network and food garden initiative supporting community kitchens and non-profit organisations in Cape Town, South Africa.

WHY WE STARTED

With over 55% of South Africans already living below the poverty-line, the national lockdown intensified the economic crisis, driving millions of people into desperation. In March 2020, South African Musician Jeremy Loops established The Big Food Drive, as an immediate response to Covid-19 lockdown food security threats.

OUR FOOD DISTRIBUTION NETWORK

Supplying 6 TONS of nutrient-dense, locally-sourced fresh produce into 6 different communities every week, our food distribution network has consistently supported 94 community kitchens and non-profit organisations around Cape Town over a 6-month period. This has contributed towards 54 890 meals PER WEEK. While this was initially a short-term mandate, we do hope to keep supporting our beneficiaries with fresh produce until we are able to implement sustainable and scalable long term solutions!

OUR COMMUNITY GARDENS PROJECT

While our daily operations have focused on immediate food security in a moment of crisis, our shared dreams with our beneficiaries is to evolve towards lasting community-based urban food gardens. With the support and help of our friends from Greenpop, Urban Harvest, and our existing network of beneficiaries and partners, we are excited to launch this second phase by October 2020. Keep an eye open for our latest developments and how to get involved. Let’s start growing and sharing in knowledge and community.

OUR PARTNERS

Meet our community of food kitchens and non-profit organisations within Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Khayelitsha, Vrygrond, Muizenberg, Costa da Gama, Imizamayethu, and Hangberg.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

In order for The Big Food Drive and our Food Gardens project to succeed, we need the on-going assistance of the community who helped us build this network. You can donate once off to aid our work or become an ongoing patron of The Big Food Drive by donating a small amount on a monthly basis.

*Please note that our partner organisation Greenpop processes all transactions. They're a registered nonprofit corporation who's governance structures aid our work.
